It’s fairly common knowledge that in order to have a successful online presence for your business, then you need a good content marketing strategy.

As the owner of a home-based business, the likelihood is, you’ll need to get your brand noticed by creating engaging content.

But one question that’s often asked is… how do you create great content? Being creative isn’t something that comes naturally to everyone. Yet if your business has only recently got off the ground, you’ve probably not got much choice. You’re the only employee; you can’t delegate just yet.

There are a lot of ways to be creative or to get into a creative mindset, at least. One of the key lessons is that you need to lose your fear. Scientific studies have concluded that creativity can’t be taught. So have the freedom to play, try out things and know you’ll make mistakes. In this context, mistakes aren’t bad; they’re actually a necessity. Google, Apple and the like don’t come up with concepts at the drop of a hat. Devices like the iPad come from playing around and working out what we all want to do. These kinds of brands support the creative process.

In numerous interviews, Ricky Gervais is always championing the art of ‘mucking around’. He’s said that everything he’s ever “written, created or discovered artistically has come out of playing”. As humans, we’re brought up in the opposite fashion. Children experiment, play and learn, yet this skill is effectively coached out of us as we grow up.

Creativity is about going back to those days.

As a home-based business owner, you do have a threat. Remember that many gurus have never tried or failed at the things they now offer advice on. Question everyone and everything. Only then will you become creative and boost your business, whatever it is.
