Your website is a global shop window for your business, but it’s also an invaluable tool – a platform that you should use to deliver content to your audience and market your brand.
Content marketing is enormous at the moment – it’s second only to internet advertising in accelerated growth and it’s said to account for more than 20% of marketing budgets. And it’s probably something that you should be aware of.
So content marketing is big business, but what is it exactly, why do you need to master content creation and where does your website fit in?
Bill Gates first drew attention to content marketing in his 1996 essay ‘Content is King’. In it, he talked about his predictions for the internet after its then-recent birth and his message was simple: companies who find ways to inform and entertain will thrive on the internet and reign supreme. Gates’ prediction was astonishingly accurate.
‘Content’ is anything that your customers and prospective customers find interesting and valuable, such as blog posts, ebooks, videos and infographics. There are plenty of ways to distribute content, but none are as rewarding as your website.
If you can drive traffic to your website, then you’ve got potential customers right in front of you. Manage to build a loyal audience and convert those leads into sales to be onto a great thing.
Let’s not forget the search engine optimization (SEO) benefits that come from regularly creating great content either. For starters, every new piece of content uploaded onto your website means a fresh index from Google, so they’ll start to notice how active your site is. Furthermore, the better the content, the more it’ll be shared on social media. Google loves popular content, so interesting stuff stands a better chance of hitting the top spot in search engine results.
The trick to creating effective content marketing for your business is to identify an appropriate type of content for your audience. If you own a business that specialises in professional legal services, you may not want to create chirpy, informal graphics. Likewise, if you design trendy mobile phone apps, then a stuffy ebook probably isn’t for you.
To have an effective website and a beneficial content marketing strategy, start at the end. Identify your customers and what they want to read. Then get to work.
