As a home-business owner, you should be grateful. Not only do you get the freedom to work the hours you want, but you also enjoy all the freedom that comes from being able to make your own strategic decisions. Success is very much in your hands.

Don’t underestimate how important that kind of freedom is, especially from a creative point of view. I’ve blogged before about the need to let yourself make mistakes in order to produce a truly creative, innovative brand.

Elsewhere in the business world, there are numerous layers of bureaucracy and interfering decision-makers who inhibit this kind of progression.

As the saying goes, you’re only limited by the boundaries of your imagination. As such, many companies are restricting their growth, not to mention their profits, by adopting a negative attitude towards their brand strategy.

We’re constantly told by a wide range of experts that in order to succeed in business today, your brand must be different. It must stand out from the crowd. But achieving this isn’t simple by any stretch. And part of the reason why it isn’t simple is because being different is sometimes a scary stance to take. The easy option is to follow the herd and copy what your competitors are doing, at least partly so anyway.

Whether it’s through your products, your services, your copy, your images or your general approach to branding, don’t be afraid to alienate people. If your brand polarizes opinion then so be it. In fact, that’s often a good thing. Again, as the cliche goes, you can’t please all the people all of the time.

But let’s be clear. Being different and polarizing opinion isn’t about offending anyone. Or being outwardly brash, for that matter. It’s just about creating a unique identity that you believe in and pushing through with it regardless of what your rivals are doing. Only then will you be able to develop true Unique selling points that reach out to your target customers time and time again.
