Mark Ford Discusses Upsell Downsell

Today I have been reading a lot of comments from people around the net about being upsold with another internet marketing product once they have purchased the front end product.

This got me thinking and it prompted me to share some thoughts with you on this and to highlight that this is the way the upsell downsell internet marketing model works online.

Have you ever thought about whatever you buy in life, online or offline, you are upsold all the time. How many times when you have bought something in a shop have you heard… “Can I interest you in this sir/madam?” – they are offering you something that is related to what you have just bought. Do we pass a negative comment when this happens or just politely say “no thank you”.

Let’s Look At The Definitiion Of Upselling

Courtesy of Wikipedia…

Upselling (sometimes “up-selling“) is a sales technique whereby a seller induces the customer to purchase more expensive items, upgrades, or other add-ons in an attempt to make a more profitable sale.

Upselling usually involves marketing more profitable services or products but can be simply exposing the customer to other options that were perhaps not considered.

Upselling implies selling something that is more profitable or otherwise preferable for the seller instead of, or in addition to the original sale.

A different technique is cross-selling in which a seller tries to sell something else. In practice, large businesses usually combine upselling and cross-selling techniques to enhance the value that the client or clients get from the organization in addition to maximizing the business’s profit. In doing so, the organization must ensure that the relationship with the client is not disrupted.

So… What’s the Problem With The Upsell Downsell Model?

Is there a problem at all with the upsell downsell internet business model?

Internet business owners are in business to make profit and cover their marketing cost from front end sales. When they offer you an upsell product they are offering you what is called a back end product, a product that is of higher value to you than the information you received in the first product you purchased.

More often than not, when you buy a product say up to $67, you can expect to be upsold to a higher priced product. Rather than take you through to a thank you page to download just the front end product, you are sent directly to the sales page for the upsell product to decide whether you want this as well.

If you choose not to buy the upsell product, quite often you will be offered a downsell product at a price lower to the one you have already purchased.

How does it work?

Let’s show this with a flow chart.

So, as I say is there really a problem with it. In my opinion no. It’s just a part of the online sales process and it goes on in life offline all the time anyway.

Let’s Look At An Upsell Analogy!

In restaurants and other similar settings, upselling is common place and an accepted form of business. In other businesses (e.g. car sales), the customer’s perception of the attempted upsell can be viewed negatively and impact the desired result.

Steak and Chips

The Upsell From Steak & Chips Is The Desert!

I have a question for you?Question

If you go to a restaurant do you get the main course and desert when you order just the starter?

NO AND YOU DON’T EXPECT IT!

So, let’s say you have just purchased a book on how you can build a business from home. Why do we say, ” this book I just paid £10 for doesn’t actually tell me how to do it in detail”.  Why do we say this when the answer is because you have only ordered the starter course?

If you want the full works, you have to order the starter, main course and the desert and pay the appropriate price to get the full menu and the most value from the products supplied to you.

The front end product is just that, the starter course. When purchasing this you will be offered the upsell, the main course where you get more detail, and then upsold to the desert as well. It then comes down to what you do with the ‘full information’ provided and how you take action on it.

With a meal at a restaurant you simply eat the three courses. With an information product you have to study the information, learn from it and take action on what you have learnt to get the most benefit from it. One thing is for sure, if it is left on the shelf or computer it will do no good for you. Just as if you leave the food on the plate you will not benefit from the nutrition in the food.

Just regard it as the norm. If you want the upsell, the downsell for that matter, then buy it. if you don’t then fine, don’t. We have the same choices when we buy online just as when we buy offline, in the restaurant or anywhere else.

All online businesses offer product solutions, product menus just like a restaurant offers you a menu when you sit down at the table.

It’s your choice, take the starter or take the lot. Buy the book, buy the application pack, buy the upsells, it’s up to you!

  1. It’s not so much the up-sell but the way in which it’s done. Some techniques straddle a moral line more than others. Scarcity for example; “when it’s gone it’s gone” on genuine limited stock would be true and not only boosts sales but tells the customer that there is a limited supply so it’s a true last chance up-sale/cross-sale. Other methods cajole.. you e.g. “you’ll miss out if you don’t get it now” and then you’ll be sorry. It works and it can be rationalized but does it sit right morally.

I guess it’s subjective and depends where an individual stands on an arbitrary moral scale. The latter makes me uncomfortable against my morale scale and I’m pretty average so I think it’s reasonable to assume there are others that feel the same.

Thanks for adding to the post by your comment Stuart.

Scarcity is a marketing ploy used by many. True if there is limited stock and even with digital product downloads these can be set to expire on a set date once a number of copies have been sold.

It is subjective on how we feel about the upsell, scarcity tactics and what you say about persuading you to buy. It happens in the offline world as well. My blog post shared that the upsell downsell model exists online and is used by many internet marketers.

It’s a simple yes or no?
