What difference are you making to your customers?
An article from Matt Press, Splash Copywriters, about making the difference to your customers – put them first!
A few years ago, I needed a new bathroom fitted. As most people would do, I set about the arduous task of researching local companies and arranging for quotes. During the quoting process, one person, the guy who I eventually went with, made quite an impression.
He turned up on time armed with a bottle of wine, something I hadn’t previously seen before and am yet to see since.
Now, I didn’t hire him purely because of that! He was also courteous, professional, knowledgeable and averagely priced (not the cheapest and not the most expensive). But my point is this. A couple of his rival tradesmen were of a similar level to him (both in terms of expertise and approach), but his initial gesture made the difference. If he hadn’t have done that, I may have still have chosen him, but the decision would have been much more of a coin toss.
To the customer (me), I had the immediate impression that he’s already prepared to go above and beyond what most tradesmen are prepared to do. In actual fact, in the cold light of day, all he’s done is bought a bottle of wine. Possibly from a garage on the way. And almost certainly a cheap bottle (not that I could tell any different). The impression I initially built of both him and his business is therefore directly related to the perceived representation of how he’s communicated his quote.
So my question to you is, what are you doing that makes a difference to your customers?
It doesn’t always have to involve wine. In fact, as the owner of a home-based business, that’s going to be difficult. But think about what you’re saying through your copy, plus how you’re coming across through your images and branding. Are you able to give anything away? Can you solve any problems for your customers? Are you offering anything for free? What makes you different from your rivals?
These kinds of questions are important ones for any business, whether they’re home-based or otherwise. And it’s vital that you resolve them. Because if you start to make a difference, you’ll begin to deliver a memorable experience for consumers. And that’s where real success will come from.
