Website Copywriting Tips from Matt Press – A good website is about more than just words.
When we talk about copywriting in relation to websites, it’s easy just to focus on the words. Their importance is clear – if you own a business, then you need the words on your website to communicate what you’re selling in an interesting and engaging way.
And anyway, that’s what copywriting is all about, isn’t it – words?
Well, not quite…
Your website copy will go a long way to dictating how successful you are.
However, just looking at the words on your website means that you could be missing a trick. In order to deliver persuasive and truly successful copy, modern copywriters need to be aware of so many other factors.
Here are 5 website copywriting tips to consider for your website content.
1. Website Copywriting Tips – What font are you using?
Sounds simple, but think about it – whether it’s the style, size or colour, we can all recognise a spammy email or a get-rich-quick con just from looking at the font. Fonts are clothes for your words, so choose an appropriate outfit for them.
2. Website Copywriting Tips – Do you have any hanging words?
Sometimes life isn’t fair. You come up with the perfect tagline, but one word gets pushed down onto another line. Accept it and change your copy though, because a hanging word looks poor from a design point of view, and it also breaks the flow for a reader.
3. Website Copywriting Tips – What images are you using?
Continuing on a theme, if you have uploaded any images or logos to your website, then make sure that your copy works around them appropriately. You don’t want paragraphs of text that continue way beyond the bottom of an image, for instance.
4. Website Copywriting Tips – Are you linking to other parts of your website within your copy?
This is a great idea from a user experience point of view, but good website architecture carries search engine optimization benefits. Rather than using generic terms like ‘click here’, picking clear destinations will impress Google.
5. Website Copywriting Tips – Are you spacing out your copy?
You are writing for the digital generation and an audience that may well be reading your web copy on a mobile phone. Your school teachers probably wouldn’t approve, but you must space out website copy with frequent paragraph breaks.
White space is your friend – nudging a sentence into it’s own space makes it stand out and transforms its effectiveness.
