The words you choose will go a long way to dictating the success of your home based business.

For it is your words that will be primarily responsible for whether your product or service can generate much revenue, and that’s often regardless of the quality of what you’re selling.

One way to create effective and influential copy that sells is to harness the power of storytelling.

Every great brand has a brilliant story. And, as such, their product descriptions take us on a journey.

Think of the John Lewis ads for example. Your copy doesn’t have to be quite so laden with emotion as those tearjerkers, but it will definitely help to appreciate what they’ve done with their adverts and why.

As humans, we love stories. We loved them as kids and, despite what some might say, we still love them as adults. But what makes for a great story? Well, its not the what, how, who or when that matters. It’s the ‘why’.

  • Why is your product or service so great?
  • Why will it make a difference to me and my life?
  • Why should I buy it?
  • Why shouldn’t I go elsewhere? And so on.

The other questions matter, but nowhere near as much. Have you ever heard of the expression ‘show, don’t tell’? In the context of digital business, it essentially means that business owners must talk with consumers, not at them.

In your business copy, there’s going to be little value in repeating a long list of benefits or, worse still, copy and pasting a product spec. Don’t take copy for granted – it’s more important than you think.

It’s also worth noting that, as humans, we hate change too. We love familiarity and it often takes a staggering level of incompetence to make us change mobile phone operators, water companies and the like. Whichever way you’re doing it, by embracing storytelling, you’re creating a positive association with your brand – one that’s going to stick for a long time.

And that can only be a good thing.
