Banners are supposed to catch the eye so they need to look good but also a great emphasis can be placed on the size and placement of the banner on a webpage.

Leaderboard banners are going to have the most impact as they are at the top and we usually read from top to bottom. Then there are side bar banners and the most popular position would be the right hand side of your webpage.

The next thing to think about is the size of your banner. There are some standard sizes and they are as follows.

  • Navigation Bar)
  • 234 x 60 Pixels (Half Banner)
  • 120 x 240 Pixels (Vertical Banner)
  • 125 x 125 Pixels (Square Button)
  • 120 x 90 Pixels (Button 1)
  • 120 x60 Pixels (Button 2)
  • 88 x 31 Pixels (Micro Button)

The next thing to consider is the main colour of your banner. Colours are emotive so you will need to look at the purpose of your banner and pick a colour that is relevant.

The last thing to consider is your graphics and animations. Only use high resolution images because you can’t afford to have a banner blurry.

  • Page Views – The amount of people who have visited your page.
  • Click Through Rate – This is worked out on how many people have clicked your banner ad and the amount of page views your page has received.
  • CPC v EPC – CPC stands for “Cost Per Click” & EPC stands for “Earnings Per Click”. This is the most important to keep an eye on. If your CPC is more than you EPC then you are losing money. If it this other way around then happy days as your are in profit.
