So I was looking at buying a new bed the other day.

After spending ages trying to work out the tangible difference in wood quality between all the options on the Ikea website (believe me, that warrants its own blog post), I’d had enough.

After deciding to halt my research and come back another day, I didn’t realize that the bed companies of this world hadn’t finished with me.

For the rest of my day, I was met with bed adverts on almost every website I visited.

Was that going to be it? From here on in, am I going to be met with bed adverts no matter where I go and until I get my wallet out?

Why does this happen? The strategy is called ‘retargeting’.

Retargeting is a cookie-based technology that allows websites (and therefore website ads) to effectively follow someone around the web.

The technology is based around a simple Javascript code that is written into a website. It’s easy to implement, invisible and won’t affect the website’s performance in any way whatsoever.

Clearly, it’s a very powerful tool. If you’re in business and were to use re targeting, you can use the technology to continue advertising products to people who’ve previously been to your site. Maybe that customer wasn’t ready to buy earlier, but they might be later? If so, re targeting can drive those leads back to your website so no sale is lost.

Re-targeting can make a huge difference to your bottom line. So, if you’ve got your own home-based internet business, should you be using re-targeting?

The trouble is, when does re-targeting become annoying? Do people generally even notice that re-targeting is happening? Is it a marketing dream or an intrusive nightmare? There’s certainly a danger that re-targeting can be viewed as a tacky approach to marketing, so in terms of big businesses, whether to use re-targeting becomes a question for brand managers.

For you, the question to ask isn’t whether it works or whether you should use it. Instead consider what the effect of using re-targeting on your brand image will be?
