Most of us conduct some sort of business on the internet, whether it’s buying a gift, hiring a plumber or using Facebook and the like. If you run a home-based business, you’ll need a website and a digital presence, but there’s more to it than just registering a URL and bunging up some words – you need your website to get found.
Recent research has indicated that over 90% of internet experiences start with a search engine. But here’s the thing. We don’t tend to look beyond page one of a set of search results. And with there being close to one billion websites in existence, getting to page one (and staying there) is tough.
Put simply, every business needs an efficient search engine optimization strategy.
There is so much search engine optimization terminology out there that trying to get a website to rank highly in search results can seem like trying to split an atom.
Here’s a basic guide to what’s going on out there and what you need to do to give your website a leg-up.
1. Create unique content.
Google has never put a greater degree of importance on fresh, relevant content as it does now. Whether it’s a blog, video, podcast, ebook or suchlike, your focus should be on creating content that people want to read and share.
The more shares you get, the better your reputation. The better your reputation and the higher you’ll rank.
2. Create metadata for that content.
Metadata is just data about data. It serves two purposes. Firstly, it makes it easier for Google to find and interpret that content (and therefore rank it). Secondly, it acts as a further marketing tool (because you still need people to click on your link even if you are ranking highly).
Essentially, metadata is about common sense. You’ve worked hard on this content – now give it the best chance of being found.
3. Establish backlinks.
Backlinks are external links back to your website. Think of backlinks like you would a reference on your CV. The better the reference, the better the backlink.
In terms of search engine optimization, backlinks aren’t as vital as they used to be, but they’re still important.
