As a home business owner, you probably are sick of hearing how you need to create quality content.

That term seems unhelpfully vague at times. Yet the fact remains that in today’s digital world, brands must use content to reach out to an audience. And if your content is good enough, those people may become loyal brand advocates, something that most CEOs would kill for.

You may fancy yourself as a writer or you might not, but putting that issue aside for a moment, what sort of content should you be creating?

The trick is to spot trends within your industry as they’re happening or, better still, in advance of the trend starting. That may sound like common sense, but how can you find such topics? Thankfully, there are a number of tools at your disposal, a mixture of free and paid-for tools.

For instance, you could try taking out a membership at Buzzsumo, a site that can help you analyse the best content on any topic. It’s reasonably pricey, but it offers a level of sophistication that few can match, so if you’re serious about keeping pace with your market’s movers and shakers, this is the option for you.

Of course, you could always use Google Trends too, which is free. That can feed you precious information on what we’re all searching for. If predicting emerging trends, identifying viral content and finding key influencers are on the agenda, trendspottr is another worthy choice. Perhaps the best of both worlds, trendspottr has both a free and paid-for option, with the range of tools at your disposal obviously improving if you become a paying member.
