Let me start by making something clear: every home-based business with any sort of online presence needs a solid Search Engine Optimization strategy.

There’s little doubt that every company would benefit from being on page one of Google for their industry terms, and you only give your website and its content the best chance of hitting those highs by creating metadata, optimising your web pages and establishing backlinks.

But, like with a lot of other things you do for your home business, nothing is guaranteed.

And by accepting that, we can see that you should never rely solely on Search Engine Optimization for your success. Your priority should always be to create quality content, whether that’s in the form of words, images, videos and the like.

That’s because your aim should be to create communities of customers and prospective customers, to stay in the public eye and to continually be on the cusp of a sale. At some stage, maybe good content might only reach page three in a search result, so you need to be aware of two things:

•    Your content needs to be better than everyone else’s.
•    You need to work on establishing your authority right now.

Working on your Search Engine Optimization strategy is essential, but it’s no different to creating a home business plan, working out your marketing budget or finding an accountant – could you succeed without them? Of course. Is it likely? No.

It just remains to say that content and Search Engine Optimization are actually part of the same strategy. If you create great content, it’s probably going to be shared. If it’s shared, over time you’ll probably get most of those Search Engine Optimization (SEO) benefits anyway.
