Search engine optimization news: Google now opt for ‘continuous changes’
A successful entrepreneur once told me that there isn’t one secret behind having a successful business. There’s no magic recipe.
Instead, it’s simply having the ability and longevity to consistently make a series of good, small decisions over a sustained period of time. It was a statement that has stuck with me, but recently I was thinking that it’s one that’s absolutely true of search engine optimization.
Having an optimal search engine optimization strategy is about making Google love your website more than the site of your competitors. It’s drastically over-simplifying matters, but that’s the ethos behind search engine optimization.
But SEO issues start to materialize when we look at what Google actually wants. Aren’t they always bringing out new algorithms and demanding different things?
Well, yes and no. You may have heard of penguin, panda and the like. But it’s best not to get obsessed with the specifics of how Google’s technology is advancing. Instead, focus on the core reasons and principles that underpin how and why Google does what it does.
Credibility, reliability and quality. Google wants websites with fresh, interesting and rewarding content that’s easy for them to marry up to various search terms. All of Google’s updates are striving to make it easier for them to measure the extent to which websites meet their criteria.
Interestingly, Google announced late last year that the Google Penguin updates will now just be ‘continuous’.
Your ranking positions for different search terms may well fluctuate, so if they do, you know why. So long as you’re still making those small, good decisions and working on your search engine optimization consistently, things will settle down. And probably continue on that upward trend.
With Google updates likely to be more continuously rolled out, we should see the end of those nigh-hysterical search engine optimization reports. There will undoubtedly be questions about repercussions. How long you get to clean up your site after an update remains to be seen, as does whether Google experiences any errors their end with ‘live’ changes.
