If you make time in your day to read through the whole article, and not just skim read, and then take action on what you learn you should come away from this with many takeaways and improved knowledge that you can implement into your home business.
What I share with you today will provide you with an overview of blogging and also answer many of the questions that I often get asked.
Then I’m going to look at why you should blog and what the benefits are, before finally revealing my system for blogging.
I’m also going to cover common hurdles that bloggers face and how to implement a successful blogging strategy quickly.
The Power of Blogging – Why should you blog?
As I have said blogging is very powerful and there are many reasons why you absolutely must have a blog.
Why Blog? – Here are some of the main reasons why you should blog:
1. With a blog, you lead with value before sales. This is immediately more attractive to people. Unlike paid advertising, where you’re paying for cold clicks and immediately trying to make money, blogging helps people first and sells second.
2. It’s free.
Again, unlike the majority of marketing and advertising strategies out there, a blog doesn’t have to cost a penny. It does, however, cost a lot of time in creating the articles and creativity is needed.
3. A blog helps create authority.
A blog is your space to make an impression on the world. It’s a place to promote your opinions on the most important issues in your industry.
4. Blogs improve the relationship with your audience.
Because you’re giving away free value, a blog post helps develop a relationship with a reader, something that’ll be important when you come to sell.
5. It helps build an email list.
A blog post is perhaps the best vehicle to grow your email list. And as popular opinion has it, an email list is still the optimal way to sell something.
What are the blogging benefits?
The power of blogging, let’s look at some of the benefits.
There are many reasons why blogging is an essential marketing strategy for any business, and not just a home business. Here are some of the big factors…
1. It will drive free search engine traffic through to your website.
2. Frequent updates get you noticed, both by fresh leads and by search engines.
3. But blogging is about more than that. Once you create several blog posts, you’ll start to transform the value of your website.
To that end, every blog post is like a brick in the wall. You’re building a house and each blog article has a part to play.
4. A good blog will do a variety of things, from sending people to videos to offering landing pages. It’s a versatile marketing technique.
5. Plus, a blog allows you to target a variety of different keywords. This will allow you to get ahead of the competition in a number of different areas.
6. And in what is quite an underrated blogging benefit, a blog post gives you the opportunity to expose the people behind your brand.
It’s vital that your audience knows, likes and trusts you, particularly if you’re giving away something that’s supposedly valuable. Your aim is to become the expert.
7. Blog content can be repurposed into a number of forms and mailed out to your subscriber list.
8. Others share your content and you earn backlinks, thus helping your rankings.
Ultimately, though, there is a key point about blogging that I must stress: a blog takes time to deliver results. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme. It doesn’t happen overnight.
Blogging is about creating a new set of habits that will reap dividends in the long run.
So long as you plan your blogging strategy and action it consistently, it will pay off.

That’s the next step.
Because you’re bound to have a lot of fears… and that’s natural.
Perhaps you’re a bit of a technophobe.
Maybe you’re worried that no one will want to hear what you’ve got to say.
Worst than that, will internet trolls leave nasty comments?
Is blogging going to take up too much of your time?
Or you’re unsure how to actually get your blog to pay out.
Whatever it is, the system will ease those fears over time.
You will encounter problems, but as well as solving any issues, you must focus on delivering content around your passions.
Ultimately, no one ever said it was going to be easy. Fruitful? Yes. Easy? No.
If you want the financial freedom and laptop lifestyle that blogging can bring, you’re going to have to put in the hard yards initially.
There’s a lot to learn.
When you’re first getting started with blogging, it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
When you blog, you’re faced with a bunch of different jobs:
- social media
- keyword research
- content syndication
- guest blogging
- responding to comments
And so on, and so on.
It might feel as though you won’t have the time to do all these things properly (particularly if you’ve got a family or you’re doing this alongside a full-time job).
So this blog article is designed to help you manage all this information, schedule your daily operation and plan your new habits.
The Power of Blogging Through Market Research
First of all, you’ve got to know who you are.
Why are you here? What are your goals? What do you offer? What are your passions?
After that, it’s time to look at your target audience.
- What problems do they have?
- What business solutions can you offer?
- What product solutions do you have?
- What marketing strategies will best help you communicate all of the above?
In an ideal world, you’ll be able to know all about your prospective audience. In no particular order, you will need to know:
- Their profession
- Their marital status
- Their income
- Their location
- Their age
- How they work?
- How they relax?
- What’s important to them?
- Why they need what you’re offering?
- Where do they hangout online?
When you know the answers to the above, create a list of 100 keywords that would be relevant for your target audience.
Fill out a spreadsheet and order the keywords in terms of competition and monthly searches. Low competition to high competition.
Then search these terms yourself to see who is currently ranking in the top few spots. That will enable you to understand the sorts of topics that are currently working well for your audience. In addition, you can also try guest blogging on some of these high-ranking sites. That will immediately put you in front of your audience, plus it will land you a backlink to your site.
The power of blogging – keyword research – How to find keywords
You can use the Google Keyword Planner or software, but from a learning perspective when I started out I preferred to do it manually. Follow this process:
Step 1: Open up Google
Step 2: Enter your keyword.
Note: Be sure to include “ speech marks” around it, so that you’re only pulling up results for that exact keyword phrase.
Step 3: Look at the number of search results returned. Look for a keyword that returns a lot of results, but not too many. Aim for 30-50,000 results. This represents the content that you are going up against with your article.
Step 4: Does Google Keyword Planner show there is actually monthly searches (traffic) running to that keyword phrase?
Step 5: Yes, add the keyword to your list and build a list of 100 words.
Blogging Tip! – As an additional way to source keywords, open up YouTube and enter one of your keywords.
Bring up a high-ranking video and watch it to get a feel for the content. Then right-click on the video and click on ‘view source code’.
Once that’s visible, you’ll be able to see all the keywords that the video owner used to tag the video asset in question.
Of course, you can enter all the keywords you find into your spreadsheet, but be sure to categorize them accordingly.
So, for any keywords that return less than 30,000 results, label these as low competition keywords.
For results that return between 30 and 100,000 results, label them as mid-range keywords.
For anything that returns over 100,000 results, label them as high-range keywords.

The next blogging job…
Right, we know have a list of keywords.
The next task is look at how many people are actually searching for these keywords.
We want to prioritise our low competition keywords and put the words that get the most searches at the top.
Step 1: Open up the Google Keyword Planner
Step 2: Enter your keyword
Step 3: Adjust the settings so that you’re only analysing English-speaking countries.
Step 4: Adjust the time setting according to the time frame you want to analyse.
Step 5: When you see the results, click on ‘Average monthly searches’ so that the results are ordered from highest to lowest searches.
Step 6: Change the ordering of your list once you have a wider picture of how many searches a keyword gets, how many websites have a piece of content on the keyword and what the level of competition is.
The Power of Blogging – What do you blog about?
Setting up your keyword list should give you plenty of ideas on what to blog about. However, there are a lot of blog articles out there, so you need to stand out from the crowd. Your articles have to be entertaining, inspirational, educational, informative and engaging. Basically, you have to be better than everyone else.
Initially, I would recommend having a document where you can just dump all your ideas (the good ones and the bad).
I do this myself. I do some market research and find out the problems that my demographic is experiencing. Then I brainstorm some potential ideas.

The Power of Blogging – Who writes your blog post?
You. It sounds simple, but many people outsource their content creation. That might be a good idea in the future, but in the beginning, you need to do it yourself.
If you are considering outsourcing any content, I’d recommend checking out TextBroker.
As an alternative option, you could leverage private label rights (PLR).
This is when you buy the rights to a particular piece of content, giving you the chance (and legal ability) to re-purpose something that already exists.
Of course, it may also be beneficial to allow someone to guest blog on your website. Or, you can source some popular blogs in your niche, contact the website owner and try to secure a regular spot on their site.
The great thing about guest blogging is that you’re essentially borrowing someone else’s audience. At the bottom of your guest posts, you can include a short piece of copy about who you are. And you can point them back to your website.
Helpfully, there are websites that have compiled listings of blogs that accept guest posts:
The Power of Blogging – Blog Structure
A good blog post is laid out in a particular way.
- The title of the blog post has an H1 tag including your keyword.
- The secondary title of the blog post has an H2 tag including your keyword. This should be appealing on the eye to the reader to stop them in their tracks, where they want to read the article/blog post. Scroll to the top of this blog post for an example and see the H2 title I have included with the keyword “The Power of Blogging”.
- The sub-titles in the content itself have an H3 tag including your keyword.
- The keyword you’re targeting should be in the first sentence.
- In the first paragraph, put the keyword you’re targeting in bold and italics somewhere else in the copy.
- A blog post is made more effective with images, but when you’re including images, put the keyword in the caption and in the alt tag.
- I’d encourage you to link out to other authoritative websites through your keyword, since this is good for SEO.
This linkage should be to other relevant articles on your own website and to a third party highly ranked website. What does this mean Mark Ford?

The Blog Structure Continued:
- From time to time add value to your post with a video.
- Always include a call-to-action (CTA) at the bottom of each post.
- And finally, I’d always recommend signing off your blog post in a consistent way, with a brief bio about who you are. Make sure this bio includes all relevant links, such as social media profiles, sales pages and landing pages.
The Power of Blogging – Syndication checklist – Not exhaustive!!!
Of course, when you’ve finished writing your blog post, the hard work is just beginning.
That’s because you need to promote your post in a variety of ways in order to get the most mileage out of your efforts.
Here is a checklist of syndication jobs:
- To begin with, head to bizsugar.com and submit the URL of your blog post.
- You also need to submit your post to Google. Log into Google Webmaster Tools, enter the URL of your latest article and click on ‘fetch’. This tells Google that you’ve written a new piece for them to index.
- Publish a link to your post on Google Plus.
- Go to pingomatic.com and ping your post to all the directories out there.
- Publish a link to your post on the usual social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc.
- Ensure that you’re making it easy for people to share your post by having share icons on your site.
- Head to printfriendly.com and turn your post into a pdf. Then go to issuu.com and share your article there.
- Similarly, log into SlideShare and upload a PowerPoint presentation of your post.
- Also, consider turning your post into a video and syndicating it around different video sites.
- Use imautomator.com and onlywire.com for informing social bookmarking sites about your work.
Note: this is only a small sample of what you can do to syndicate (distribute) your content around the internet. It is in no way an exhaustive list and you will need to create your own syndication system and be consistent in following it.
In doing so you are not then purely relying on the search engines picking up your content and ranking it. You are also working to get more eyes on your content by doing this. If you are not doing this then you are limiting your audience. Period!
Blogging Q & A
1. What free marketing strategies can you recommend?
The answer has no ending. Free marketing strategies are only limited by your own level of creativity and willingness to think outside the box.
Here is one example…
When someone opts into your list from a landing page, you can do a search for them on Facebook and find their profile. Once you’ve found their profile, you can request to be a friend, contact them and start a conversation. Thank them for opting into your list and position yourself with them in a helpful way to answer any questions they may have.
Some people will ignore you, some will say no and some will say yes. The point is, you’re being proactive. You have to talk to your leads. They’re not going to come to you.
2. How long is a good blog post?
A good blog post used to be about 400-700 words. These days, Google is looking to rank valuable content with at least 1,000 to 1,500 words.
3. What strategy do I need if I have no subscribers?
It’s common to start with nothing. There are a number of techniques for discovering great post ideas. But ultimately, at the start, you need to work out who you are and what the value of your story is. Once you’re aware of that and you know who your audience is, you can understand what their problems are.
After that, it’s just a case of solving their problems, writing about it and then syndicating that content.
4. If I’ve got different areas to blog about, should I put them on different wbesites?
Yes, it’s a good idea to create mini sites for different products and different audiences.
Structure your content so that it’s relevant for your particular audience. If some of your content doesn’t fit with a certain demographic, then it’s not going to work.
5. What is blog syndication?
It’s the process of letting people know about your content, such as via social media for example.
6. What are the main questions you get when you speak to new leads?
It depends on the person’s level of experience. You could be talking to an experienced marketer who just has a handful of specific questions.
Alternatively, you could be speaking to a total beginner who wants to move out of the corporate world and get into blogging as a marketing strategy. This kind of person might not even have a question – they might not know what they want.
In that situation, you just ask them questions and start to learn about their problems.
When you’re more familiar with them, you can tell them about yourself and how you can help them.
How long does it take for blogging to pay off?
It completely depends on a number of variables. It can be a matter of weeks or months, depending on what your market is, which keywords you’re targeting and, of course, your ability to execute the system.
Blogging results will be different for everyone. And… it is very true that blogging works and also doesn’t work. That depends on whether you consistently work and follow a blogging system and not just do a part of it.
What are H1, H2 and H3 tags?
The H stands for heading. In your content management system (CMS) there will be an option to change a highlighted word or phrase into one of these styles.
And that’s what we’re talking about – a style format.
