Writing tips: what makes for a great headline?
An article from Matt Press, Splash Copywriters, writing tips about great headlines.
Because of digital copy and the way we absorb content, headlines have taken on great importance.
Very few people initially read a web page word-for-word. Instead they scan for headings and phrases that stand out before investing time in reading the rest of the text.
So headings break up blocks of text and make web pages more visually appealing, but they also act as a kind of sales tool too.
They’re playing an important role in keeping your brand in front of potential customers.
Also, due to the fact that there are a lot of websites out there, competition is therefore tough.
Harness Internet Traffic
Harnessing internet traffic is one thing, but building an engaged audience is quite another. As a result, the very first headline takes on even greater significance.
My advice would be to keep your top headline relatively short. It can be funny, clever or serious, but it should nevertheless be a clear indication of what your article is about.
Headlines usually need to contain a benefit to a reader, what will they get if they read on?
Headlines. the question format and the numbers…
The question format is also quite effective. By using it, you’re suggesting that there’s a problem that you’re solving.
You’ll also see numbers used in headlines: 10 ways of increasing your ROI; Boost your profits in 3 steps; 7 ways of trebling your lead conversions. Consciously and subconsciously, people like to be aware of how much content there is. Human nature means that we appreciate order and organization, so we approve of lists.
And one last tip…
Don’t forget that your headline is a weapon in the world of SEO, so try to fit a keyword into the title of your post. Recent research also seems to show that Google prefers keywords to be positioned at the beginning of the headline. Of course, that’s not always going to be possible, but it’s certainly worth bearing in mind.
